Internal Communications

Brand Standards — Style Guide

I created this writing and brand standards guide to support Horizon School Division staff in producing consistent, clear, and accessible communications. Drawing on journalism and plain language best practices, the document outlines everything from tone of voice and spelling conventions to logo use and accessibility considerations. It reflects a communications culture that values clarity and equity, and continues to serve as a go-to resource across the division.

Plain Language Tips

  • Avoid jargon and use short, clear sentences.
  • Use everyday words like: about, ask, helpful, next to.
  • Avoid complex phrases like: in order to, utilize, ascertain, held a meeting.

Page 2 highlights how to write in active voice and use positive instructions. Examples include: "Michael rowed the boat ashore" rather than "The boat was rowed ashore by Michael."
