Inclusive Family Communications

While writing an annual report recap, I discovered that families in our division speak 46 different languages at home. Combined with ongoing work around web accessibility, this insight sparked a broader effort to improve equity in family communications—beginning with the implementation of a real-time translation feature across all school and division websites.

I also worked with our communication system provider to enable automatic translation for the messages sent to families. Around the same time, I noticed in platform logs that many families weren't regularly checking email. In response, I led the expansion of the system to include SMS messaging and oversaw the division-wide rollout of school-to-home texting. These changes ensured that more families could stay informed and engaged in their own language, and through the channels they use most. I developed supporting materials for the rollout, including social media posts, website graphics and print posters to ensure families understood how and why to opt in.
